So often I hear people say, “I’ll start therapy when I’m ready.”
Or, “I need to sort myself out first before I can really talk about it.”

Behind these words, I sense the weight of pressure—the belief that healing requires us to be perfectly prepared, to know exactly what to say, or to have clarity before we even take the first step.

But here’s what I’ve learned: you don’t have to have it all figured out to begin.

Healing is not about walking into a room with all the answers. It’s about allowing yourself to arrive just as you are—confused, uncertain, even scared—and trusting that that is enough.

When I think of the people who come into therapy, very few arrive with neat stories. Most come with scattered pieces: memories that don’t quite make sense, feelings that seem too big to hold, questions without answers. And that’s okay. Therapy is not about arriving with a finished picture. It’s about slowly, gently, placing the pieces on the table together.

Sometimes the very act of showing up is the bravest part. To sit across from someone and say, “I don’t even know where to start,” is already a step toward healing. Because it means you’ve chosen not to carry everything alone.

And the truth is, life rarely gives us the luxury of clarity before we begin. Growth often happens in the messy middle—in the conversations that wander, the pauses that linger, the tears that come without warning.

Starting before you feel “ready” is often where transformation begins.

So, if you’ve been waiting for the right time, the perfect words, or the moment you feel “together enough”—maybe this is your reminder: you don’t have to have it all figured out. You only need the courage to begin, with whatever you’re holding right now. Because healing isn’t about knowing the destination. It’s about trusting the journey, step by step, breath by breath.
